Last month I told you about my first adventure into decorating with the ugly brown painted bedroom.  Another one of my earlier adventures into DIYing was taking an old sewing machine cabinet, stripping it down to bare wood, and then giving it an “antique” white finish.

In those days, there weren’t easy instructions on how to do this so I bought an “antiquing kit” that had all the items necessary to “antique” it.  After  I “antiqued” it, I took the top piece of the cabinet and changed the hinges to make it open to the back instead of the side.  I added a mirror to the opened top.  I put a couple of shelves in the hole where the sewing machine had been. I had created a vanity table for myself.

My Dad helped me with the hinges, but most of it I did myself.  I had my makeup and combs and brushes on the shelves.  I forgot what I used for a chair, but I don’t think I made one.  I was about 21 or 22 years old at the time. I wish I had pictures of it. I was very proud of my work. It looked pretty good and it functioned exactly as I had envisioned.
